Windshield protection film is a clear, impact-absorbing layer bonded to the outside of your glass. A stone that would have starred the windshield hits the film instead and the energy spreads out before it reaches the laminate.
The economics are the reason people do it. A modern windshield is not a piece of glass any more. It carries the forward camera, the rain sensor, often the heads-up display, and replacing it means recalibrating the driver assistance system on top of the glass cost.
Film is a fraction of that, and when it has taken enough hits you replace the film rather than the windshield.

A stone strike concentrates enormous force on a tiny point. The film spreads that energy across its surface so the laminate underneath never stars.
No tint, no haze, no rainbow at the edges. You should not be able to tell it is there from the driver’s seat, day or night.
